moment none of the leading men in the Canton Government is opposed to Christian teaching. And all anti-Christian

demonstration is suppressed so far as the Government is able to suppress it.

(3) Kwok Man Tong:- Five years ago there was no foreign

influence in this party. Foreign influence began with Sun Yat Sen's appeal to Russia for an advisor. After

Sun's death Russian influence came in as a flood with

the result that the party was split into two sections -

viz:- Right and Left.

The Right was opposed to Russian influence in all its forms but lost its influence with the masses,

especially the labour unions, and is now in exile.

The Left is willing to use Russia so far as it served

their purpose to do so but of course may discover too

late that Russia is another "old man of the sea".

Within the Left there are two factors, viz:-

(a) Sun Yat Sen's follwers: they are for democracy as

they understand it. Their strength lies in the amy and their principal man is Cheung Kai Shek. This

faction is glad of Russia's help in military matters but will have nothing to do with communism. The members

of the present Canton Government are practically all

of this faction.

(b) The out and out Com unists:- their strength lies in

the labour unions, though not all labour unions are

comunistic. There is constant strife between (a)

and (b) which sometimes shows itself in open conflict.

The present unrest in Canton is due to this conflict

but the Government has the situation fairly well in hand

though it is unable to do nearly as much as it would like

in regulating the activities of the Unions.

The avowed object for which this association was

founded was to complete the work of the Revolution of 1911.
